(1) A compact self-contained computer that can be carried around and used either with a battery pack or mains power supply. (See also Laptop.) (2) Any hardware or software or data files that can be used on a range of different computers. For example, Adobe's Acrobat graphics file format can be viewed on almost any type of computer.
